Yale SOM offers an environment in which partners and families feel
supported and part of the community. More than one-third of our students
come to campus with a partner. When you choose to attend Yale, you
are entering a community with a support system in place for your partner
or family.
Yale University is a diverse and culturally rich community
with much to offer students as well as their partners. Families
and partners enjoy access to Yale’s world-famous libraries, museums,
and athletic facilities, and they can audit Yale courses. Below
is a list of benefits which will help to make Yale a positive and
enriching experience!
ID Card
Yale Affiliate ID cards are available to spouses and same-sex domestic
partners. These cards can be used for shuttle bus access, library
privileges, Yale Bookstore 10% discount, and access to athletic
facilities such as the Payne Whitney Gym and Yale Golf Course.
Affiliate ID cards will be issued beginning in late September 2006.
You must submit proof of marriage or same-sex domestic partnership
to the Office of Student and Academic Services in Room A37; contact Shannan
Warner for information.
Yale Shuttle Service
The Yale Shuttle service provides 24-hour transportation around
campus, and from 6 pm-7.30 a.m. from Yale buildings to residences
(within service boundaries). This service is free to any person
with a valid Yale ID card(including affiliate ID).
Guest passes are available in the Office of Student and Academic Services for
student partners who do not qualify for Affiliate ID cards are.
ID Cards or guest passes must be shown to the driver upon boarding
the bus. The guest pass may also be used for a 10% discount at the
Yale University Bookstore.

Payne Whitney Gymnasium
Spouses and partners are eligible for gym membership. There are
several levels of student spouse/partner membership, with fees ranging
from $54 per semester to $285 for year-round membership. You and
your partner must go together to the Payne Whitney gym to sign up.
The student will need to show a Yale ID and some form of documentation
indicating that the two of you reside together.

Course Auditing
Spouses and partners may informally audit up to two Yale SOM elective
courses per semester, space permitting and with the instructor’s
permission; no fee is charged and no transcript or other record
of attendance are provided. Pick up an SOM Student Partner Auditor
permission form from the Office of Student and Academic Services (A37). Partners
may also audit Yale College (undergraduate) courses, and courses
in some of the professional schools with the instructor’s permission;
consult Shannan Warner in the Office of Student and Academic Services for more information.
Library Privileges
Spouses and partners are eligible for borrowing privileges. Complete
an application in the Privileges Office of Sterling Library (High
Street) and present the student’s ID card as well as the partner’s
Affiliate ID card. Unmarried partners will need to present proof
of joint residence. There is a fee of $50 per semester.
Yale Work Life Program maintains a comprehensive 70-page childcare directory.
The directory provides information about day care, preschool and
babysitting and nanny services. It also lists local activities for
families. Begin researching childcare options as early as possible,
as many facilities at and near Yale fill up well before the academic
year begins.
