May I audit a course?
Id like to take a course outside SOM
- where can I find information on whats offered?
Can I use a non-SOM course for my MBA course
requirement?
How many credits will I receive?
How do I register for a non-SOM course?
Auditing "core" courses is not permitted under
any circumstances. Auditing an elective course is
permitted only :
- with the instructors permission (signified by his/her
signature on the add/drop form)
- if the class is not over-subscribed
No course units are awarded for audited classes, but the class
will appear on your transcript as an audit if the instructor verifies
the completion of audit requirements. A student who audits a course
may not subsequently take that course for credit.
The expectation for auditors is generally that they will attend
lectures and participate in class discussion, but not write papers
or take exams; an instructor may set more stringent requirements
for auditing his/her course.
Check the
university course listings. Some schools and departments include
course descriptions on their websites:
Yale
College (undergraduate courses)
Art
Architecture
Divinity
Drama
Epidemiology & Public Health
Forestry and Environmental Studies
Graduate School
Law
Music
Absolutely! We encourage you to take an elective course
(or more than one) at another school in the University.

The Registrar determines how many units will be awarded for
non-SOM courses, based on contact hours per semester (not the amount
of work required for the course). In most cases you will receive
4 units at SOM; for 2-credit professional school courses, you will
receive 2 units at SOM. You will be notified of the number of units
you will receive when your registration for the course is finalized.
Undergraduate courses (other than introductory and intermediate
level language courses) do not normally qualify for credit at SOM.
To receive credit, you must receive permission from the Director of
Student and Academic Services. Forms to request credit for an undergraduate course
are available in the SAS.
- Obtain the instructors permission
- File an add/drop form
- For a Law School course: register with the Law School
Registrars Office (Sterling Law Building, 127 Wall Street)
as well as filing an add/drop form at SOM. [You cannot be enrolled
in the course until we receive notification from the Law School
that you have registered with them.]
- For an undergraduate course: file a request for SOM credit
in the SAS. If you dont file a permission form, you will
be enrolled for audit only. [NOTE: this permission is not required
to register for credit in an introductory or intermediate language
course.]
