spring 2008 bidding
for second years

Bidding processes are used by many business schools to allocate scarce resources, i.e., seats in elective classes. Since some courses have fewer seats than others, and some courses are more in demand than others, not all bids will be successful. If the resources matched or exceeded demand in all instances, bidding would not be necessary - everyone would simply register for the courses they want!

Bidding will begin Thursday, November 15 at 12:00 noon (EST). Deadline for submitting bids is Monday, November 26 at 12:00 noon (EST).

Bidding Process
• You bid for fall-term classes in the summer and for spring-term classes around Thanksgiving.
• You have 500 points to bid each semester.
• You are required to bid for a minimum of 16 units and you cannot bid for more than 20 units for the semester. You need 72 units in order to meet graduation requirements (52 units for joint degrees).
• Once the bidding page is activated, you can submit your bids at any time and you are free to go back and change bids as often as you wish before bidding closes.
• Bidding early or late does not affect your chances. Only the bids in the system at the time bidding closes are recorded and used.

Tips for Bidding
• Prioritize the classes you would like to take.
• Consider the number of seats available and the likely competition for these seats. The number of seats for each course will be included on the bidding form and excel version of the schedule.
• Limit the number of very popular courses you bid for, especially if the enrollment limit is low.
• Consider the bidding history.
• Beware: The minimum number of points necessary to get into a class in a prior semester could be fewer than will be necessary next semester!

Add/Drop Period
• Students adjust their schedules during the add/drop period by using the on-line form
• The last day to add full semester and session-1 electives is Tuesday, January 29.
• The last day to add session-2 electives is Monday, March 31.
• You have three weeks from the start of a course to drop it. If you need to drop after that, please obtain permission from the Registrar, Shannan Warner.
• Many students adjust their schedules during the add/drop period. If you have been placed on a waitlist, be sure to attend the first class session. There is a strong possibility you will get in.

NON-SOM courses
• Permission from the instructor is required for enrollment in all University courses. You can ask permission via email or when you attend the first class. Once you receive permission, you simply add the course using the on-line Add/Drop form during the add/drop period (first week of classes). Some schools and departments in Yale College and the Graduate School restrict enrollment for certain classes to their students. It would be smart to email the instructor ahead of time to ask about availability of a class.
• The Law School requires permission from the Law School registrar as well as the instructor. A permission form is required for enrollment. These forms can be obtained from either SAS or the Law School. Note: The Law School limits non-Law students to one elective course per semester.
• You are permitted to take undergraduate courses and to count them toward your MBA, provided you do some extra work. You must submit a Petition to Receive Graduate Credit form to SAS. If you take an elementary or intermediate language course, you don’t have to do extra work to get credit at SOM.
• Course schedules for all schools at Yale can be found on the Online Course Information website. You can also search for course days and times on the individual school websites.
• NonSOM courses and cross-listed courses not held at SOM will follow the calendar of the School where the course is held. You must follow their academic calendar and attendance policies.
