Responsibility Statement
Introduction
Yale School of Management (SOM) prides itself on its ability to
present a positive image of the school as well as its faculty, staff
and students. In order to establish and ensure that the high standards
achieved by our print materials are mirrored electronically, we
have established the following policy and guidelines that will apply
to all members of the SOM community acting in an official capacity
for the School of Management and/or using university resources.
Policy Statement
The purpose of the web pages and of providing web space to individuals
and groups at SOM is to enhance the educational mission of the School
of Management. All pages are subject to review. The contents of
all pages must abide by and conform to local, state, and federal
law and to university policies. Pages that provide material relevant
to an individual's professional role at the University are highly
appropriate. However, pages that are recreational and provide little
or no information pertaining to the School of Management or provide
links to clubs, businesses, churches, and other organizations not
affiliated with the University are discourages and should be avoided
if at all possible.
Electronic documents are subject to the same university policies
and standards as print publications. Accordingly, it is expected
that proper attention will be given to spelling, grammar, style,
mechanics, etc. All copyright and trademark laws apply. Web Page
Authors must secure copyright permission and model releases to publish
text, graphics, and photographs that are not in the public domain.
Any work obtained from students must exhibit their prior consent
and written permission in order to be used in university Web productions.
Records of such permission must be maintained and available for
review. These records must be kept current and reflect any additions
and changes made to the page. Use of the Yale School of Management
name, trademarks, official logos, and other copyrighted materials
must be in accordance with university policies.
Web pages that do not abide by the policies and/or guidelines are
subject to removal from the Yale School of Management web servers.
The support and maintenance of World Wide Web pages takes many
resources and much personnel time and communication capacity. Computer
and technology resources are subject to several limitations and
many competing demands. The major priority for support of the Web
pages is as a university publication, for instructional usage and
for staff and faculty support. Questions or comments about Web policies
or guidelines should be directed to the Information Technology Group.
Departmental Guidelines
- The Supervisor of any department, organization, or a professor
desiring a Web page should appoint an individual to be responsible
for the development and maintenance of the Web page. This person
is known as a Web Author. Students who are members of SIG groups
or who author pages for faculty members must follow the same strict
compliance with university policy as do departmental Web Authors.
- The designated Web Author is responsible for the following:
design (depending upon which server houses the document and what
purpose it serves), construction, and establishment of the page;
planning, coding and input of all page content; procurement of
necessary copyright clearance and model releases; timeliness of
page content; manipulation of page graphics; and on going maintenance
and updates. (note: If the Department does not have the expertise
to construct a web site, that expertise will be provided, if all
content information is given to the Web Group (within the Information
Technology Group) in a pre-determined format and timely manner.
The initial web site will then be constructed for that department.
- For guidelines concerning both print and web-based publications as well as the school's logo, please contact the Office of Communications at 203.432.6009 or som.extra@yale.edu.
- All statements contained within the Web pages must be consistent
with and in compliance with the University's overall policies,
mission, and purpose.
- It is strongly encouraged that all web sites use Macromedia
Dreamweaver or Claris HomePage for web development. The Information
Technology Group provides support for both of these applications.
All other design or FTP programs will be given minimal technical
support.
- All department web sites will follow the basic structure established
at the department sample web site. Any variations must have approval
by the Information Technology Group and External Relations. There
are several variations to the sample site, however, the basic
structure must stay within the guidelines stated to provide easy
navigation for visitors of your web pages.
- If items from other directories on the SOM Web server are used,
the Web Author must link his/her code to the existing item rather
than copying it into his/her directory. This will save valuable
server space. The Web Group will supply you with the proper location
of image files.
- The Web Group and
Help Desk are available
to provide limited technical assistance in the construction of
Web pages. Given sufficient lead-time, you can be instructed on
how to scan color pictures and slides for incorporation into university
Web pages. Web Authors should provide their own media for these
scanned images. The individual Web Author is responsible for any
editing and resizing of such scanned images.
Faculty, Staff, Student &
SIG Guidelines
Having a personal web page hosted on a server in the som.yale.edu
domain is a privilege, not a right.
- Faculty, staff and student personal web space is assigned to
an individual who is responsible for the content, design and development
of their personal web page(s). Yale School of Management does
not preview or edit personal web pages. However, you must adhere
to the following general rules in developing your pages.
- Personal web pages must not contain illegal material. This
includes (among other things) text, images or programs which are
copyrighted by other people, unless the copyright owners have
given permission for you to use their material on the web. You
must be prepared to produce a statement of permission if asked.
- Personal web pages must indicate clearly who is responsible
for their content. Each page must contain your name and e-mail
address, and include a link to the responsibility statement which
is located at http://www.som.yale.edu/rs.asp
(see statement below)
- Personal web pages must not interfere with the normal operation
of the server or the campus network as a whole. This may happen,
for example, if you consume a large amount of disk space, or if
many people access your pages, retrieve large images, etc. If
some or all of your pages consume a large amount of the server's
resources or the capacity of our network link, you may be asked
to remove them.
- Personal web pages must not be used for commercial gain. If
you are running a business ( this includes all sales, consulting,
etc.) you should acquire a commercial account to serve web pages
dealing with your business. You may have a link from your personal
web pages to your commercial web pages, but the latter should
not reside in the "yale.edu" domain.
- Because personal web pages on this server contain "yale.edu"
as part of their URLs, they inevitably reflect your affiliation
with Yale University and Yale School of Management, notwithstanding
your responsibility for their content. Therefore, they should
not contain material which undermines the University's statement
of purpose and its character as a world-class institution of higher
education. This includes materials which are highly offensive,
profane, vulgar or abusive.
Responsibility Statement
The preceding page is a personal web page. Its author is solely
responsible for its content. The name and email address of the author
are found on each personal page.
The current computer acceptable use policy is available at http://students.som.yale.edu/aup.asp.
