- Log into the network, preferably via ethernet.
- Open the Norton Anti-Virus ("NAV" from now on) application.
- Click on the "LiveUpdate" button.
- Click the "Next" button until you are prompted to click the "Finish" button.
- Allow about 30 seconds after clicking "Finish" for the software
to complete it's update.
Booting to Safe Mode: (this only applies to students, staff and
faculty computers are configured differently and can run the tool
without Safe Mode)
- Restart your computer.
- When you see the manufacturer's logo screen (right at the start
of the boot up process), press and hold your F8 key (along the
top of your keyboard).
- A list of boot methods will be displayed. Highlight "Safe
Mode" and press enter.
- If asked to login, Class of 2005 students will use their normal
netid/password, Class of 2004 students will need to use their
Administrator account and password. (User: administrator Password
is most likely the same as your netid password, if you cannot
remember it, please stop by the Help Desk and we'll help you
reset it)
You will see very different text on the screen for a minute or two. This
is normal. You will also get a message explaining that you
are operating in a limited mode. This is what you want, so
click on OK.
- Open the Norton Anti-Virus application.
- On the left side of the NAV window, click on "Scan Computer" (This
should appear under the "Scan" heading in the directory tree). This
will change the right-hand side of the window to list each of the drives
you have available to scan.
- Click on the box next to "Local Disk (C:)" to put a check mark there.
- Click on the "Scan" button in the lower right-hand corner of the NAV
window.
NOTE : Once the scan begins running, you can minimize the NAV window
and do other work. Any viruses found will be listed along with their
status in the final screen after the scan is complete. The important
thing is that any viruses found be quarantined successfully - taken out
of active status so they cannot be run - but any viruses found should be addressed
whether they are quarantined or not. If Welchia is found on your computer,
please follow the directions above to make sure it's fully cleaned from your
computer. If a different virus is found, please contact the Help Desk
via e-mail with the name of the virus found and we will address it from there.
- Click on Start
- Click on Windows Updates (up near the top of the pop-up menu from Start)
- Click on the link to " Scan for Updates " (say OK if prompted to
update your program)
- Skip to "For all users:" below
- Click on Start
- Move to All Programs
- Click on Windows Updates
- Click on the link to " Scan for Updates "
For all users: You will see a screen offering 3 types of updates - Critical Updates
(which, by default, will all be selected), Recommended Updates (which you must
select on your own), and Driver Updates. We urge you to do at least all
of the Critical Updates ASAP tonight. The recommended updates are
just that - recommended. You don't urgently have to do them, but they can
be helpful.
- Click on the link to "Review and Install these Updates"
- Click on the link to "Install these Updates".
- Reboot when prompted to do so, and repeat these steps until all critical
Windows Updates have been installed.
