Your Account
Your NetID and your password are your identity on all SOM and Yale University systems and network resources. You are responsible for any activity that occurs when your NetID and password are used. Sharing your NetID and password is prohibited. Contact the SOM-IT Helpdesk immediately if you encounter suspicious activity on your account. By using your NetID and password, you acknowledge you are aware of and will abide by the Yale Information Technology Appropriate Use Policy. Yale and SOM electronic policies can be found at (http://www.som.yale.edu/itg/policies.asp).

Don't Forget to Log-off
The lab computers or the kiosks are shared machines. Not logging out leaves your data and e-mail available to the next person using that computer. Please log off when you're done.

Labs and Study Space (http://www.som.yale.edu/business_services/rooms)

Computing Labs
SOM has two computer labs available to students 7 days a week.
B74 Lab has 45 computers with laptop access points at each.
B39 Training Lab has 16 computers.
Labs are “open” when not being used for a class. SOM tries to ensure both labs are not busy at the same time. Please check the room schedule for availability.
Students are reminded to log-off the computers before leaving the lab to keep their data and e-mail private.

Study Areas
Food For Thought (Hill Lounge) has both ethernet and wireless access and a laser printer.
B51 & B52 has study carrels with network and power in each one. Printers and a fax/copier are in the hallway. Most breakout rooms have tables wired with networking and power.

Publishing workstations

B30 has two workstations, a laser printer and a color laser printer. Each workstation includes a color scanner, memory card readers and a CD burner. Software includes:

Desktop publishing - Pagemaker
PDF creation software - Adobe Acrobat
HTML and Web - Dreamweaver
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) - Caere OCR
Graphic Editing - Adobe Photoshop

Accessing the Network and Services

Wired Network Jacks
SOM-IT provides many ethernet jacks in classrooms, breakout rooms and common areas throughout the School. A standard network cable (RJ45 Cat 5) is required to use these jacks.

Wireless Networking
SOM also has a significant wireless presence on its’ campus. The maps below show where signals will be the strongest.

B 81-86 (Dungeons)
Hill Lounge (Food for Thought)
B Level Classroom
A Level Classrooms
55 Hillhouse Ave. - 1st floor
Donaldson Cafeteria & Social Science Library also have wireless service.

Note: A network cable and jack provide the best network access speed and security. Wireless networking provides additional coverage but speed and throughput may be issues.

Requirements
Yale's wireless network is currently a mixture of 802.11b and 802.11g access points. SOM is entirely 802.11g. The wireless cards in the SOM Laptop Program are fully tested within the Yale wireless network. Not all wireless cards have been tested, but non-Laptop Program students have the best results with either Linksys or Cisco 802.11b/g or 802.11g cards.

Modems
SOM contracts 48 56K modems through Central Yale. The modem pool is available free of charge (a local call in New Haven) 24 hours a day to SOM faculty, students and staff for School related business. Configuration and policy information can be found at www.som.yale.edu/itg/online_help/config_dial_up
Note: Modem connections terminate automatically after ½ hour of inactivity.

Network Services

Web E-mail
If you're not near your laptop or an SOM computing resource, you can check your mail by clicking on "web e-mail" in the header of www.som.yale.edu

Network Storage
Those items with a bullet are part of the network storage at SOM. These items are backed up on a regular basis. Please note that the data and software on your own computers is not backed up by SOM-IT.

• Online disk space (X: drive)
Students are allocated 250 MB each on the student data server. This space is mapped as the X: drive on the computer.
• E-mail/Outlook
Students are allocated 1GB for their Outlook e-mail
• Web (V: drive)
Students are allocated 15 MB for personal web activity. This is mapped as the V: drive on the computer.
• Share Directory (S: drive)
For projects requiring access by multiple individuals to common data, students can request a folder on this drive through the SOM Helpdesk. Each quota is determined upon consultation with the requesting party and is at the discretion of IT.

Terminal Services Software Distribution
SOM licenses specialized financial and statistical applications and makes them available to all students through Citrix Terminal Services. The software and installation instructions can be found at www.som.yale.edu/itg/online_help/config_citrix

Online Tutorials
SOM-IT has purchased tutorials for Microsoft Office and Windows. The SOM community is welcome to use the guides, which can be downloaded at www.som.yale.edu/itg/online_help/custom_guides/.
Note: Available only to the SOM community; requires your NetID/password.

Printing
Printing is available throughout the school on a charge-per-page basis. Current black and white printing defaults to duplex mode. Black and white laser printing is 4 cents per side; color laser printing is 25 cents per side.

Each print job has a cover page with your NETID, document name and charges for the print job. There is no charge for the cover page.

The printers are named by location and type (“color” lasers or b/w “laser”). Students can print to any of the printers from any authenticated computer on the SOM Network. Be sure to check which printer is currently selected before re-submitting a print job. Printer information is available at: www.som.yale.edu/itg/access/addprinters
Note: Only those transparency sheets available through the mailroom should be used in the SOM public printers.

Yale University & SOM Site Licensed software
Microsoft Office Professional (1 laptop installation/student)
Symantec Anti-Virus
Citrix Terminal Services
Please visit the Help Desk with any questions or for installation assistance.

Theft Prevention
All members of the SOM community need to be alert to the possibility of theft. Never leave your laptop and other valuables unattended – either at SOM or away from it.
Each year OSA has the Yale Police Department visit SOM and offer security tagging. www.yale.edu/police/STOP
Watch for a posted announcement of the date.

Students are advised to get renters insurance and specify replacement cost to ensure you are completely covered against theft.
